NO SERIOUSLY: Toy Story 3-Reviewed!!!

Imagine the emotional oscillations of the last episodes of Six Feet Under. Pixar has adapted those lessons and themes for the Toy Story saga.  Over and over again you watch these toys face the void.  A void that takes on different doctrines: the landfill, the attic, rebirth at a daycare center, maybe various forms of “hell”… each possibility comes with different degrees of existential despair or euphoric hope– the hope is sometimes courtesy of blind faith.

This is a movie for children that teaches very important lessons through all of the colors, action, laughs, and mayhem: not all victories remain so forever (there can still be losses); and, point blank, everyone dies.  Some of this ground they introduced in Toy Story 2, but here they expand on it.

Sure, as a widower parent maybe I’m projecting a little on this movie, but not much at all.  The newspaper reviews like to play up the “empty nest” theme that the producers are likely facing at home with the kids they based the original Toy Story on ages ago.  But the ideas are deeper than “empty nest,” and that is to the credit of the Pixar team.

They can still subtly deliver important messages while entertaining your pants off.

This movie might be a bit slower than its contemporaries, but it’s a higher quality film and more of a good time than any other animated movie out there for kids right now.  Sadly, Randy Newman’s score was a bit too schmaltzy.  The Gipsy Kings, however, contribute nicely in at least one part.

Pixar continues to provide an opening short for its films. Though charming, this one was ultimately mediocre.  They’ll likely never again top the hilarity of “Presto” or “For the Birds.”

Take your kids to see this movie — really, as a family. And Toy Story 3 does not need 3-D.
