MGMT Clashes with Roadies, Refuses to Settle on Water Break Dispute
BROOKLYN, NY–According to representatives for the band, MGMT, roadies that have been with the act for several years have finally walked out and gone on strike over a longstanding dispute concerning water breaks.
“They are under the impression that if they strike, MGMT will give in to their demands,” said Dan Vickle, public relations person. “Little do they know that MGMT insists they will remain firm on this water break issue. You give ‘em a little and you end up giving up everything. That’s not how MGMT plays ball.”
A spokesperson for the roadies claims now that their current contract is about to expire, they will lose crucial water break time in the midst of hectic turnarounds in which they are constructing stages, hanging lights and setting up musical equipment. And now that the band’s new album has reached #2 on the Billboard charts, the workload has doubled, yet the amount of water breaks have remained the same.
“It’s unfair,” said Sal Bandunio, business agent for The Roadies Union Local 375. “It’s cruel and unusual punishment to expect the roadies to perform their tasks to the best of their ability without giving them proper breaks to drink some water and remain hydrated. There’s a saying in this business, ‘A dehydrated roadie is an inefficient roadie.’”
Meanwhile, roadies like Fred Hunchbricker will be picketing outside MGMT concerts, carrying signs that read, “MGMT is UNFAIR” and “NO WATER, NO JUSTICE.”
“You’ll see me outside every MGMT concert until this is resolved,” said Hunchbricker. “The kids that come to these shows must understand the importance of the working man not being exploited and obtaining the proper amount of off-time in order to ensure a better performance at his job. Someone has to tell these kids. Some has to tell them.”
When asked if she felt any sympathy for the roadies’ cause, concertgoer, Heather Bittle, 15, replied, “Uh, I don’t know. Why don’t they, like, get new roadies and stuff? What’s their problem? Don’t they know they probably have like the coolest job in the whole world? I would like work for free just to get to see MGMT every night and stuff. God!”
Representatives for both parties will meet at the bargaining table early next week, though a tough battle is expected.
