SXSW 2010 Cancelled Due to Lack of Interest

AUSTIN-According to Mayor, Lee Leffingwell, this year’s South by Southwest Music Festival will be cancelled due to the lack of interest shown by musicians, people working in the music industry, and the citizens of Austin.

images-1“To my surprise, this year, there have been barely any bands applying for a spot at one of our many venues,” said Leffingwell this morning. “Usually, we get hundreds of thousand of applicants, all bidding for a chance to play at South by Southwest. This year, we’ve had three. The Typicals from Detroit, the Usuals from Sweden, and the Repetitives from here in Austin. That’s it. Sorry, folks, but there’s no way the city of Austin is going to throw down a wad of dough to cater to a three-band show. We can do that any time of year. And we do!”

Guitarist, Frank Hacklegrimm, of the Detroit’s The Typicals, expressed much dismay over the cancellation of the festival, insisting that his band could fill the void left by the absence of other larger and more successful acts.

“All we need is this one chance to prove ourselves. I know we can show the world how hard we rock. They don’t need thousands of bands to enjoy a week’s worth of music. They just need one. Us. We can do it, I tell ya! We can do it!”

Despite Hacklegrimm’s plea, the city has already informed most venues to expect nothing during the week that usually brings more business than any other time of year. Gary Kinkle, owner of The Concrete Lounge, a venue that typically draws over ten thousand people during South by Southwest expressed relief more than anything else when hearing of Leffingwell’s announcement, claiming that bringing in all that money can be somewhat exhausting and troubling, particularly when counting it all.

“My fingers tend to cramp up after spending a couple of days counting the ridiculous amount of money South By Southwest brings to The Concrete Lounge. My wife usually has to massage them when I get home, which can be a burden for her, what with her reality shows and all. I’d rather just say ‘forget it’ and skip the festival this year. It’s too much of a pain in the ass.”

As far as the festival taking place next year, Leffingwell told reporters that it will, again, depend upon the amount of bands applying for slots.

“If there are any bands out there interested in playing in Austin next March, please contact us. Please! What Austin really needs right now is more bands, more musicians and more people from California filling our streets and occupying most of our businesses! It’s like a desert here right now. It’s depressing. And besides, who’s ever heard of a desert in Texas?”
