Giant Check Used to Pay for New Beatles Releases
Portland, OR—After discovering how much it would cost to purchase the newly released Beatles box sets, one set a remastering of their entire catalogue in stereo and the other set a remastering in mono, Jim Klippets of Portland, Oregon hadn’t any choice but to leave Ricky’s Rockshop and head home where he had stored the giant check given to him by Publisher’s Clearinghouse earlier this year. The check, written out to Klippets for the amount of $250,000, was then tied to roof of his 1989 Volkswagen Jetta and hauled back to Ricky’s, where Klippet’s endorsed it over to Ricky himself, in exchange for the two Beatles box sets.
“I had to have these box sets,” said Klippets with a shit-eating grin on his face. “I couldn’t live with myself knowing there was a remastering of songs I already have on vinyl, cassette, 8-track and other CD releases. That would torment me.”
According to Richard Grumbo, aka “Ricky,” Klippets has always been the first in line whenever anything related to the Beatles would be released.
“When the One collection was released, he had to be the first ‘one’ on line to buy it. And when the Naked CD release…Well, you get the picture. It really made for an unpleasant afternoon.”
As far as the check is concerned, Grumbo doesn’t believe he’ll have any trouble depositing at his local bank. He claims they take all kinds of checks, large and small, and they even have a popcorn stand in the middle of the bank to help alleviate some of the tension banking sometimes causes, particularly in these tough economic times.
“They’re a great bunch over there at the bank. We have a heckuva time whenever I make my morning deposits. I sometimes spend an hour just chitchatting with the girls behind the counter. Wait until they see this check. That’ll make for a whole afternoon of gossip and inquiries. I love that kind of stuff.”
Upon listening to the new Beatles releases, Klippets told his roommate, Gary Saddles, that he didn’t hear that much difference between these mastering and earlier masterings of the recordings. Still, he expressed his satisfaction that no one can say that he isn’t a dedicated Beatles fan, maybe the most dedicated, at least in Portland anyway.
“Oh, he’s very proud of loving the Beatles,” said Saddles. “That’s all he ever talks about. Some people play video games. Other people go to church. He loves the Beatles. Hey, whatever it takes to get by in this crazy, unpredictable world. Whatever it takes to get by.”
