Just By Chance, Bob Dylan Lands Lead Role in The Bob Dylan Show
Hollywood—After months of auditioning actors and performers, producers of The Bob Dylan Show, a new comedy series on the ABC network, have decided that the legendary folk-rock singer/songwriter, Bob Dylan, will have the chance to play the lead character, Bob Franklin, a singer/songwriter who juggles the trials and tribulations of working as a big time performer with the never ending obstacles that get in the way of maintaining a solid marriage (His wife will be played by Mary Tyler Moore).
“We auditioned Dylan about five times,” said executive producer and the show’s creator, Carl Reiner. “We pretty much knew he was our guy but the people at the network weren’t sure, only because sometimes you don’t know what the hell he’s saying. He often sounds like he’s speaking with rocks in his mouth. Still, there’s a certain charm to him that’s undeniable.”
Other actors that auditioned for the part were Richard Gere, Todd Barry, George Lopez and Danny Devito.
Joining Dylan on the show will be the late great comedic actors, Mory Amsterdam and Rose Marie. Both will play writers helping Dylan (or Franklin) flesh out his songs so they live up to the expectations put on them by their boss, who will be played by Reiner himself.
According to Reiner, the premise to the show came to him in a dream, one in which he was sitting a desk and trying to come up with the title for a show and The Bob Dylan Show popped into his head out of nowhere. When he woke up, he wrote the name of the show on a pad he keeps by the side of his bed and later that day, he pitched the idea to the network.
Reiner also claims he hadn’t even though about casting Dylan in the part. It was Dylan’s management that contacted him, requesting an audition. Apparently, Dylan’s first audition was the one that won Reiner over, with Dylan showcasing the slapstick abilities he has been famous for over the years.
“He’s like an old young Charlie Chaplin,” said Reiner. “He can do anything with his body. It’s like he’s made of rubber. It’s been a longtime since there’s been someone like that on television. I think this show will put an end to reality television and bring the sitcom back for good.”
Dylan, who was reached for comment, only had this to say about his new job:
“Rfrrggaafrrgga deddasssaaffrggga ggeeuuguoaa.”
